  3. Submit: passport copy, bank account details, departure confirmation
  4. Receive refund within 2-4 weeks to your overseas bank account

Who Can Get a Pension Refund?

Foreigners who paid into Korea National Pension (국민연금) and are leaving Korea permanently can claim a lump-sum refund (반환일시금). Citizens of countries with social security agreements with Korea may have different rules — check the NPS website for your nationality.

Note: Citizens of some countries (e.g. USA, Germany) cannot get a refund due to social security treaties, but can transfer contributions to their home country pension system.

FAQ

Can Americans get a Korea pension refund?
No. The US and Korea have a social security totalization agreement. US citizens cannot receive a lump-sum refund but can count their Korean pension contributions toward US Social Security benefits. Contact the Social Security Administration for details.
How long do I have to apply for a refund?
You must apply within 5 years of leaving Korea or becoming eligible. After 5 years, the right to claim expires. Apply as soon as possible after departure.
Do I get the employer contributions back too?
No. Only your own contributions (4.5% of salary) are refunded, plus interest. The employer contributions (4.5%) are not returned to you.
